15 Rainy Day Activities for Toddlers (That Don't Involve Screens)

The rain is bucketing down. The park is out. Your toddler has the energy of a small hurricane. Here are 15 ideas that'll save your sanity and maybe even be fun for you too.

Messy play (embrace it)

1. Kitchen disco

Clear some floor space, put on their favourite songs, and let them dance it out. Bonus: grab some wooden spoons and pots for a drum kit. It's loud. It's chaotic. They'll love it.

2. Indoor obstacle course

Couch cushions on the floor, a blanket tunnel over chairs, pillows to jump on, a line of tape to balance-walk along. Takes 5 minutes to set up and entertains them for ages. Time them and watch them try to beat their record.

3. Sensory bins

Fill a container with rice, pasta, or dried beans. Add scoops, cups, little toys to find, and funnels. Lay an old towel underneath and let them go. This is solid gold entertainment for 1-3 year olds.

4. Painting (without the stress)

Tape a large piece of paper to the floor or use an old cardboard box laid flat. Squirt some washable paint and let them at it with brushes, sponges, or just their hands. Put them in an old t-shirt or just a nappy - less washing, more fun.

5. Playdough kitchen

Homemade playdough is easy (1 cup flour, half cup salt, 2 tbsp cream of tartar, 1 cup water, 1 tbsp oil - cook on the stove until it forms a ball). Give them cookie cutters, a rolling pin, and a plastic knife. They'll "cook" for you for a solid hour.

Calm activities (for when you need a breather)

6. Blanket fort + books

Drape a sheet over some chairs, throw in cushions and a torch, and stack up their favourite books. Even toddlers who won't sit still for stories will sit still in a fort. There's magic in a fort.

7. Sticker play

A sheet of stickers and a piece of paper. That's it. Peeling stickers is brilliant for fine motor skills, and they feel like absolute artists when they're done. Stick them to windows for a "stained glass" effect.

8. Window watching

Pull a chair up to the window and watch the rain together. Count the cars. Look for birds. Race raindrops down the glass. Sometimes the simplest things are the best.

9. Sorting games

Grab a muffin tin and a handful of random small things - buttons, pom poms, pasta shapes, coins. Let them sort by colour, size, or just fill and dump (toddlers love fill and dump).

10. Audiobooks or podcasts for kids

Not a screen! Audiobooks and kids' podcasts are amazing for quiet time. Try "Story Pirates", "But Why?", or "Circle Round" for little ones. Put it on while they play with blocks or colour in.

Get-moving activities

11. Balloon tennis

Blow up a balloon, grab a paper plate each as a racquet, and play balloon tennis in the living room. It's slow enough that toddlers can actually hit it and fast enough to burn energy. No broken lamps (probably).

12. Freeze dance

Play music, dance, hit pause - everyone freezes. Toddlers are spectacularly bad at freezing and it's hilarious every single time.

13. Indoor treasure hunt

Hide 10 small toys around the house and give clues (or just say "hot" and "cold"). For older toddlers, draw a simple map. They'll beg to play again.

14. Yoga for kids

YouTube "Cosmic Kids Yoga" - it's a story-based yoga adventure and it's genuinely brilliant. Even the most energetic toddler gets into it. Ok, this one technically involves a screen. We'll allow it.

15. Puddle jumping (yes, in the rain)

When all else fails... just go outside. Put them in their gumboots and a raincoat and let them jump in puddles. They'll be cold, wet, and the happiest they've been all day. Bath afterwards, warm PJs, hot chocolate. Perfect rainy day.

The rainy day survival kit

Keep a box ready with: playdough, stickers, a few new-to-them toys (rotate them), crayons, and a balloon. When the rain hits, you're already prepared.

And when the sun comes back? Time for the pool. Grab your swim nappy, pack the wet bag, and get outside. Those puddle-jumping kids are going to love the beach even more.
