TIP: This also makes a cute gift for your little ones to share with their friends!
Why We Love Homemade Playdough
Homemade playdough ticks all the boxes: it's non-toxic, easy to make, and provides endless hours of imaginative play. An age-old favourite for a reason, playdough is such a winner for toddlers as it is great for sensory play and improving fine motor skills. Unlike store-bought versions, you know exactly what's going into your homemade playdough, making it a safer option for little hands and mouths.
You Will Need:
- 1 cup of flour
- 1/2 cup of salt
- 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
- 1 cup of water
- Food colouring (optional)
Method:
- Gather Your Ingredients
Start by gathering all your ingredients. This is a great opportunity to involve your little ones in the process. Let them help measure and pour the ingredients – it's a fun way to introduce basic math and cooking skills.
- Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Stir them together until well mixed.
- Add Wet Ingredients
Add the water and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients. If you’re using food colouring, add a few drops to the water before mixing it in. To make multiple colours, be sure to divide the dough into separate bowls before adding each colour.
- Cook the Mixture
Transfer the mixture to a medium-sized saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. As you stir, you'll notice the mixture beginning to thicken. Continue stirring until it forms a dough-like consistency and starts pulling away from the sides of the pan.
- Cool and Knead
Remove the dough from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Once it's cool enough to handle, knead it on a clean surface for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and pliable.
Tips for Success

Store your playdough in an airtight container or plastic bag to keep it fresh for weeks.
