Simple Mindfulness Activities for Kids


The thought of getting a child to meditate might seem a bit funny. It can be tricky to get kids to sit still for even 30 seconds, let alone 10 minutes. But teaching them simple mindfulness practices can be a fun and rewarding way to help them calm their minds, improve focus, and better understand their emotions. Here are a few easy activities to get started:


Breathing Exercise: Help your child focus on their breath. Have them imagine smelling something yummy on the inhale (like flowers or brownies) and blowing out candles on the exhale. Start with 10 breaths, then gradually increase the amount over time.


Mindful Bedtime Ritual: A short mindfulness routine before bed can help kids relax. Try a body scan, where they focus on different body parts, or a gratitude practice where they share one thing they’re thankful for.


Go For a Walk: Going for a walk is a great opportunity to practice mindfulness. Stay silent for a few minutes, focusing on the sounds around you, then talk about what you heard and how it made you feel.


Mindful Eating: Before eating a snack, ask your child to observe its appearance, texture, and smell. Then, focus on the sensations while eating. This practice encourages kids to slow down, savour their food, and enjoy the moment.


By starting small and making mindfulness fun, kids can learn to relax, focus, and enjoy the present moment!
