The Working Mum's Beach Day Survival Guide
Beach days with kids can go one of two ways: magical golden-hour memories, or a full-blown logistical nightmare. Here's how to land on the right side.
The Night Before
The secret to a good beach day starts the night before. Spend 10 minutes packing and you'll thank yourself tomorrow.
- Pack the beach bag: Sunscreen, hat, towels, swim nappies, rashies, wet bag, snacks, water bottles. Done.
- Charge your phone. You'll want photos.
- Check the tide and UV. Low tide = more sand to play on. High UV = go early or late.
The Morning Of
Get there early. Before 9am if you can. The beach is quieter, the sand is cooler, and the UV is lower. Plus, parking.
Pro tip: Put swimmers on under clothes at home. One less change to deal with when you arrive.
The Setup
Keep it simple. You don't need a gazebo, a windbreak, six chairs, and a portable kitchen. You need:
- A towel or mat to sit on
- A shady spot (tree, umbrella, or just a hat)
- The beach bag within reach
That's it. Kids don't care about the setup. They care about the sand.
The Snack Strategy
Sandy snacks are inevitable. Embrace it. Pack things that are:
- Easy to eat with sandy hands (pouches, bananas, crackers)
- Not temperature-sensitive (skip the yoghurt)
- In containers that close (sandy grapes are nobody's friend)
The Exit Strategy
This is where most beach days fall apart. Here's the trick:
- Give a 10-minute warning ("We're leaving after one more swim")
- Do a final rinse in the shallows
- Wet swimmers go straight into the wet bag. Zip. Done. Car stays dry.
- Dry clothes on. Snack in hand. Drive home.
The Real Secret
Lower your expectations. The perfect beach day isn't Instagram-perfect. It's sandy sandwiches, salty hair, one kid crying because a wave splashed them, and the other one eating seaweed.
