A Winter Wellness Ritual Worth Trying: Fire Cider

When winter rolls around, keeping our families well takes centre stage — and that’s where simple, natural remedies can make all the difference.

One of our favourite cold-weather rituals? Fire Cider — a time-honoured tonic that supports immunity, digestion, and overall wellbeing. It’s made from everyday ingredients, surprisingly easy to prepare, and perfect for families looking to embrace a more natural approach to winter wellness.

We’ve teamed up with the lovely Lynsey at Natural Mumma’s Toolkit and Seed and Sprout Nutrition to bring you this nourishing, family friendly recipe — a handy one to have on hand when the sniffles start to spread.

What is Fire Cider?

Fire Cider is a traditional herbal tonic made by infusing apple cider vinegar with immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory ingredients like ginger, garlic, chilli, and citrus. After steeping for a few weeks, the liquid is strained and blended with a touch of raw honey for balance.

It’s a powerful combination that can help support circulation, ease congestion, and give the immune system a little extra love — all without the need for synthetic ingredients.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1/2 cup freshly grated ginger

  • 1/2 cup freshly grated horseradish root (or 1 tsp powder)

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 10 garlic cloves, crushed or chopped

  • 1 organic chilli pepper, chopped

  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon or orange

  • 2 tbsp dried rosemary leaves

  • 1 tbsp turmeric powder (or 2 tbsp freshly grated turmeric)

  • 1/4 tsp cayenne powder

  • Organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar

  • 1/4 cup raw honey (or more, to taste)

How to Make It:

  1. Add all ingredients except the vinegar and honey to a clean, quart-sized glass jar.

  2. Pour in enough apple cider vinegar to fully cover the ingredients.

  3. Seal the jar (use parchment paper under a metal lid if needed) and give it a good shake.

  4. Store the jar in a cool, dark place for 4–6 weeks, shaking daily.

  5. After steeping, strain the liquid through a cheesecloth or mesh strainer into a clean jar, squeezing out as much as possible.

  6. Stir in honey to taste, and store in the fridge or a cool pantry for up to one month.

How to Use:

Adults can take 1–2 tablespoons daily during winter or at the first sign of a cold. For kids, start with a smaller dose (1 teaspoon) and always check with your healthcare provider if unsure. You can also drizzle it over salad, mix into dressings or marinades, or stir into warm tea for a flavourful health boost.
