Three Easy Homemade Icypole Recipes for Summer
There’s something about summer afternoons that calls for a slow moment, bare feet, and something cold in little hands. Homemade icypoles have become a quiet staple around here, simple to make, easy to customize, and a gentle alternative to store-bought options when you want to know exactly what’s going in.
These three recipes are on high rotation in our freezer. They’re naturally sweet, toddler- and kid-friendly, and take just a few minutes to prepare. No fancy equipment, no long ingredient lists, just real food, blended and frozen.
Mango & Coconut Cream Icypoles
Creamy, tropical and perfectly soft once frozen, these are a favourite for first icypoles and warm-weather days.
You’ll need
1 large ripe mango (or around 1½ cups frozen mango)
½ cup full-fat coconut cream
Juice of ½ a lime (optional)
A small splash of water or coconut water to blend
Method
Blend all ingredients until completely smooth and creamy. Pour into icypole moulds and freeze for 4–6 hours, or until firm.
Optional: For a marbled effect, swirl a little extra coconut cream through the mixture before freezing.
Cacao Banana Icypoles
These taste like a frozen chocolate milkshake, but are naturally sweetened and nourishing, ideal for afternoon snacks or post-beach treats.
You’ll need
2 ripe bananas
1 cup milk of choice (dairy, almond, oat or coconut)
1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Method
Blend everything until silky smooth. Pour into moulds and freeze until set.
Optional for older kids: Add a tablespoon of almond or cashew butter for extra creaminess and staying power.
Berry Icypoles
Bright, fresh and a little tangy, these are a great way to use up berries and are easy to layer for a fun visual moment.
You’ll need
1½ cups mixed berries (fresh or frozen)
½ cup Greek yoghurt or coconut yoghurt
1–2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey (optional, depending on sweetness)
A splash of water to blend
Method
Blend until smooth, pour into moulds and freeze for 4–6 hours.
Variation: Alternate layers of berry mixture and plain yoghurt in the moulds for a simple striped icypole.
A little note..
If you’re making these for babies under 12 months, skip honey and maple syrup and rely on the natural sweetness of fruit alone.
Like most things in family life, these don’t need to be perfect. A little drip down the arm, a half-eaten icypole left on the grass that’s summer too.
Save these for the warmer days ahead, and feel free to make them your own.
