Creating a Dream Nursery: Tips for a Mindful, Minimal Aesthetic

To celebrate the expansion of our Pekpi collection with our Nursery range designed for at home and beyond, we thought we would share our favourite tips for putting together a nursery you love to spend time in. It’s true that there’s not a lot that you really need in the very early days, but it’s not long before you’re spending a lot of time in this room with your little one through naps, storytime, play and your daily routine. For this reason, we loved putting together a minimal, and mindfully curated nursery that grew with our child.

Today, we’re excited to share our favourite nursery styling tips that embody our vision of “A life lived in colour.”

Embrace a Minimalist Palette

As much as we love colour, our favourite aesthetic is starting with a neutral colour palette and adding pops of our favourite hues to create a calming space that doesn’t scrimp on the fun-factor. Think whites, creams, and natural textures like timber furniture to begin with to provide a versatile backdrop for pops of colour and unique decor pieces. We love that this also sets the scene for updating the aesthetic over time, making the space more adaptable with considered additions throughout each age and stage of your babe’s childhood.

Choose Sustainable, Quality Furniture

As an extension of the point above, opt for nursery furniture that is not only beautiful but also sustainable. Pieces made from responsibly sourced wood or recycled materials are ideal. Look for pieces that grow with your child, converting and adapting to their needs over time. Second-hand is also a great option for sustainability’s sake and could secure you higher-quality pieces for a fraction of the price.

Create a Calming Ambiance

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood of the nursery. Incorporate soft, warm lighting with the use of dimmable lamps that will be an essential for midnight feeds but later for creating a calming setting for your pre-bed routine. Natural light is also important, so use sheer curtains to allow sunlight to filter through gently and from a practicality perspective make sure you also have a blockout curtain or blind to support the all-important sleep schedule!

Add Fun & Flair

Incorporate personal touches that add some flair to the space. We’re over the days of the Pinterest-perfect nursery… have some fun with unexpected objects that bring joy into this space… after all, you and your babe will likely be spending quite a bit of time in there over these early years! Incorporate items that add warmth and personality like heirloom pieces, a printed cushion or blanket (like our newly released Cotton Blankets here) or custom artwork.

Artwork Hack: Hang a Blanket or Swaddle on the Wall

Inspired by our new Organic Baby Blankets launch and Swaddles (coming soon!), add a splash of colour and pattern to your nursery by using one of our beautifully designed organic swaddles as wall art. Let the colours and prints inspire other pops of colour throughout the room like adding a colourful cushion, lampshade or toy on display.

Keep it Clutter-Free

A minimal aesthetic is all about keeping the space clutter-free. Use baskets, bins, and drawers to store toys, clothes, and other baby essentials neatly out of sight. This helps maintain a clean, serene environment conducive to both rest and play.
