Water Play Ideas for Under 5’s
When the days warm up, nothing beats water play for keeping little ones happy, cool, and entertained. From sensory fun for babies to splashy backyard adventures for preschoolers, water play is one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to bring joy into your child’s day. It’s also a great way to build motor skills, encourage imagination, and sneak in a little learning while you play.
At Pekpi, we’re big believers in simple, sustainable fun. You don’t need a fancy set-up - just a few household items, a splash of creativity, and maybe a swimsuit or two ready to go. Here’s our guide to water play ideas for under 5’s, both at home and out and about.
At Home Water Play
For Under 1’s – Sensory Splashes
Babies may not be ready for the big splash, but they can still enjoy gentle sensory experiences:
Water in different vessels – Try small bowls, cups, and jugs with just a little water for them to splash, dip hands into, and tip between. Add a drop of food dye for colour fun.
Water + glitter bags – Fill a zip lock bag with water and glitter (tape it securely!) and let baby squish, pat, and explore. A mess-free way to enjoy water play.
Make ice paints - Fill icypole moulds with water and different colour food dyes, add a popsicle stick so that little hands can manoeuvre them. Lay out large pieces of paper and let them create their masterpiece!
For All Ages – Easy Backyard Setups
Paddling Pool – A classic. Throw in some cups, spoons, or bath toys and let them lead the play.
Sprinkler Obstacle Course – Set up a sprinkler and a few backyard “obstacles” (cones, boxes, hula hoops) for kids to run, jump, and crawl through. Endless giggles guaranteed.
Frozen Treasures – Freeze a bowl of water with small figurines inside (dinosaurs are a hit, but follow your child’s interests - animals, cars, or even LEGO pieces). Hand over a few tools - toy hammers, spoons, a spray bottle, or a little bucket of warm water - and let them work to “rescue” the treasures.
Out and About Water Play
Sometimes the best water play happens when you get out of the house:
Local Splash Pad – Many councils now have free splash pads or spray parks - perfect for toddlers and preschoolers to safely explore sprays, fountains, and jets of water.
Local Pool – Indoor or outdoor pools are a family favourite. For under 5’s, stick to the toddler area or shallow ends where they can gain confidence.
Creek or Beach Exploring – If you’re near natural water, a shallow creek walk or tidepool adventure (always with close supervision) is perfect for paddling, spotting fish, and collecting shells or pebbles.
Watering Garden Helpers – Hand them a small watering can at your local community garden (or even your backyard). Water play + nature connection in one.
Bonus Tips: Sun Safety & Mum Hacks
Because water play often means plenty of sunshine, here are a few ways to keep little ones safe and make your life easier:
Sun Safety First
Always slip, slop, slap: sunscreen, hats, and shade.
Pop them in a full-length rashie for ultimate protection (shop our Pekpi range here).
Schedule water play for mornings or late afternoons to avoid peak UV hours.
Mum Hacks for Easy Clean-Up
Keep a bucket or tub near the back door - kids can do a quick rinse before heading inside.
Lay a few old towels down for an instant “drying station.”
Have a dedicated place for swimwear and wet towels to avoid soggy piles in the hallway.
A bucket or our Wet Bags are perfect for this - shop the range here.
For frozen play or messy activities, set up on a tarp or old picnic rug for quick pack-up.
Why We Love Water Play
Water play is more than just fun - it’s an invitation to explore, imagine, and create. For under 5’s, these activities help:
- Develop fine and gross motor skills
- Encourage problem-solving and curiosity
- Support sensory development
- Offer endless opportunities for social play (and giggles!)
And the best part? Water play is low-cost, sustainable, and endlessly adaptable. Whether you’re at home with a bowl of frozen dinos or out at a splash pad, the joy is the same.
So, grab your Pekpi swimmers and sunhats, set up your space, and let the water fun begin!
